Max Bramer has been Digital Professor of Information Technology at the University of Portsmouth, UK since 1989 and was Head of the Department of Information Science from 1989-1997. Previous appointments include Lecturer in Computer Science, The Open University, Head of School of Computing and Information Technology, Thames Polytechnic (now University of Greenwich), Knowledge Engineering Programme Manager, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Bristol.
Visiting Professor, Birkbeck College, University of London (1997-8). Visiting Fellow for EPSRC-funded project "Critical Systems and Data-Driven Technology", University of Exeter (2002-5).

   

Leader of the University of Portsmouth's Artificial Intelligence Research Group. Research interests include data mining (in particular the automatic derivation of classification rules from examples), case-based reasoning, model-based approaches to diagnostic reasoning and methodologies for knowledge engineering.

   

Chairman of SGAI, the British Computer Society's Specialist Group on Artificial Intelligence. Technical programme chair for the twenty-eighth SGAI annual international conference AI-2008, to be held at Peterhouse College, Cambridge from December 9th to 11th 2008 and many previous SGAI conferences. Co-organiser of the annual British Computer Society Prize (competition) for Machine Intelligence. Member of the General Assembly of ECCAI, the European Co-ordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence.

   

Joint Local Arrangements Chair for the Nineteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI-05) held in Edinburgh July 31st-August 5th 2005. IJCAI-05 was hosted by SGAI, The Specialist Group on Artificial Intelligence in its 25th anniversary year. IJCAI is the premier world AI conference. It returned to Britain in 2005 for the first time since 1971.

   

Founding member of the International Steering Committee for the IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM). Conference Chair for ICDM '04 - The Fourth IEEE International Conference on Data Mining, Brighton, November 2004.

   

Chair of IFIP Technical Committee 12 (Artificial Intelligence) since 2003 and UK Representative since 1998.

Member of International Program Committees for IFIP World Computer Congresses WCC 2004, WCC 2006 and WCC 2008. Joint Programme Chair for AIAI-2004: The First IFIP Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations, Toulouse, France, August 23rd-26th 2004 (part of the IFIP World Computer Congress WCC 2004).
